Body language plays more of a role in communication than you might think. It is actually responsible for 55 percent of all the speech that takes place between people. This is quite a high amount. If you want to correctly convey what you are trying to say to someone, you need to learn how to effectively use your body in ways another cannot misconstrue. You are probably using it right now and do not even realize it. Maybe your eyes widened in surprise at the statistics I just threw your way. This is body language. So let's get started, shall we?
1. Eye Contact
Eye contact is possibly the most commonly used form of body language; one that many people use for numerous reasons in a variety of settings and situations. For instance, when one person is interested in another, intense eye contact is typically made. This is usually followed by a glance of the body, with one person making stops at specific sexual organs. This form of body language lets the other know, "Hey, I want you".
Eye contact or lack thereof, is a sign of lying. It is extremely difficult to look another in the eyes when not telling the truth. However, prolonged eye contact is a tactic cunning liars use as a means of compensating for the lie they are telling. It is a way of fooling you into believing they are telling you the truth.
2. Crossing Your Arms
When you cross your arms you are showing people you do not want them to come near you. You are not being inviting, but rather showing signs of withdrawal. If you are having a discussion with someone, albeit your boss or spouse, it shows you are not open to new ideas and that you are not willing to listen--your mind is already made up. Just the opposite is true if your arms are down by your side in a relaxed manner. You appear approachable.
3. Your Posture
Your posture, whether sitting or standing, tells people a lot about you. If you walk with slumping shoulders and head hung down, you may not only be emitting signs of low confidence, but also sadness. It tells people you may need someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.
4. Gestures
Gestures include a number of things, from a nod to a wave. When you nod to someone it can be an acknowledgement of their presence, or a sign of approval. Waving may be a means of saying hello, goodbye or calling someone to you. The most common way people these days express their anger to someone is by displaying the most popular finger on their hand to whoever angered them. Everyone knows what this means.
5. The Elbow Pop
Your elbow can be a dangerous weapon sometimes, but is an effective way of getting your point across. If you are in a hurry and are fighting your way through a busy crowd, you may bend that beast to push your way through. This tells people exactly what your situation is. Although they may not like your tactic, they generally move from your space.
The elbow pop can also show you are relaxed in a situation. If you lean back in a chair with your elbow bent as you lean back on it, your upper body is open and you appear relaxed and at ease.
6. Facial Expressions
Your facial expressions speak volumes about what you are thinking and trying to say to someone. If you are on a date with someone you like, your eyes are soft, your face is relaxed and a smile appears. Your face is the reflection of your heart and mind.
Never underestimate the power of body language to attract women. Not only can you interpret what someone is trying to say to you, but it is also a way for others to hear what you are saying to them. You had better learn this language fast. Misconception is a terrible mess to clean up.
